Many sports around the world are recognized with the equipment used to play them, such as hockey sticks and tennis racquets. This certainly includes baseball, a sport hugely popular in the United States and Japan that uses baseball bats and catchers’ mitts. Casual players and pro athletes alike will need baseball bats and softball bats to play, and these bats may be made of either wood or metal. While an off-the-shelf bat will do just fine, some players may want doctored bats, such as rolled bats for sale or shaved slowpitch softball bats. What is the appeal of rolled bats for sale and shaved metal bats, though? While these modified bats are not allowed at sanctioned games, they are quite handy for casual games or for practice sessions. What is there to know about rolled bats for sale or shaved metal models?

Rolled Baseball Bats

Ash wood is the traditional material for making baseball bats, and these wooden bats contain natural fibers that will bend and break as baseballs hit them. This is to be desired, since enough impacts will distress the bat’s fibers enough to fully break it in. A fully broken in bat is more flexible and can thus strike a baseball further than a fresh wooden bat will. Some players may not have the time or interest in breaking in a bat, though, so they may opt to buy rolled bats for sale online and use them instead. Or, they can buy a fresh wooden bat and take it to a bat rolling service in their area.

To do this, a wooden baseball bat is passed through a series of pressurized wooden rollers, and this will simulate the process of using a bat during practice sessions. Care should be taken, though, so that the bat is not distressed too much and damaged instead. Assuming the work is done correctly, the rolled bat will have bent fibers that resemble those of a naturally broken in bat. Thus, a rolled baseball bat will perform similarly to a broken in bat. That makes rolled bats for sale an attractive option for a player who wants to strike balls further for casual games, and rolled bats are a fine idea for practice, too. A player may have a few prized broken in wooden bats, and they won’t want to risk damaging those bats in practice. So, they can buy or make rolled bats to act as stand-ins. But it should be noted that rolled bats and other doctored baseball bats are forbidden from use in sanctioned games, and an expert might be able to recognize them on sight.

Shaving Metal Bats

Meanwhile, some baseball bats are made not of wood, but out of metal, and they will have a hollow body with padding on the inside. That padding will keep the bat secure during use and is somewhat flexible, but that can be modified. A player may look for shaved baseball bats for purchase, or buy a a metal bat and take it to a shaving service for modification.

A metal bat will not have wooden fibers to distress. Instead, a lathe table is used. The metal bat’s end cap is removed to expose the bat’s hollow interior, and that bat is placed on the lathe table and slowly fed into a rotating grinder surface. That grinder will scrape off a few ounces of the bat’s interior padding, though no padding should be removed from the bat’s handle. Once this is done, the bat is removed and its end cap replaced. It is now ready for use.

A shaved bat is more flexible since some of the padding is removed, and that allows the bat to strike a ball further than normal. But care should be taken to not grind off too much padding, or the bat becomes too fragile. Overall, these shaved bats are a fine option for casual games, since they are not allowed in sanctioned events. What is more, shaved metal bats should not be used in temperatures below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This is to help protect the bat from suffering ill effects in the cold during gameplay.
