Your first time skydiving is one of the most memorable experiences you could ever have. You will start a first time jumper and that can be a little scary, but after that first jump, every jump gets a little easier. Like many who start out as a first timer, you may find yourself hooked on the rush.

Skydiving does seem a little intimidating, doesn’t it? And everyone’s heard all the old jokes about jumping ut f a perfectly good airplane. But there really is no rush quite like that freefall to the ground. Parachuting has been around a lot longer than many people think. It was Leonardo DaVinci himself who sketched the blueprints for the very first parachute back in 1485.

Now, skydiving is almost commonplace. Around 3.2 million skydives occurred in the U.S. in 2017, according to the USPA. That’s a lot of jumping out of a lot of airplanes. By and large, skydiving is very safe. There are few accidents during skydives because companies take all precautions and use multiple backups to keep everyone as safe as possible. Of course, there’s always some risk…but life is full of risk. Research shows that around 69 percent of millennials consider themselves to be adventurous. What’s more adventurous than going parachuting?

The Tandem Parachute Jump

A first time jumper will perform a tandem parachute ump where a more experienced jumper is attached to the first timer. In a tandem jump, the freefall lasts between 45 to 60 seconds. This is followed by a four-minute ride to the ground under the parachute. The skydiver will pull the pilot chute out at about 2,500 feet. A drogue chute is then used to regulate the rate of the fall. A typical altitude for skydiving is around 13,000 feet, which gives jumpers around 60 seconds of freefall time. Most tandem jumpers need to be at least 18 years of age.

What to Expect as a First Time Jumper

Your first time skydiving will be scary, exhilarating, thrilling on every level. You’ll fall around 120 mph during the freefall. You’ll also enjoy an added bonus of skydiving: it’s great exercise! Research shows that skydiving burns around 230 calories per hour for the average 150-pound person. It increases your heart rate, so you get a quick cardio calorie burn during the fall!
