Natural disasters can occur at any time. On a worldwide basis, the United States is in second place when it comes to these types of events. Even though there may be some warning that a natural disaster may or will occur, the severity of these events are often unpredictable and may continue for several days or even longer.
Tornadoes
While tornadoes can occur in a variety of regions within the country, the central United States tends to experience them the most. In 2016, there were approximately 971 tornadoes that occurred in these and other areas. This was more than any other country experienced at that time.
Earthquakes
Southern California is known for its earthquakes, and there are an average of 10,000 that strike this area every year. While these earthquakes will generally last between ten to 30 seconds, some have a longer duration and a more significant impact.
Hurricanes
Hurricanes are another potentially devastating natural disaster. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that hurricane season is officially six months long on the Atlantic coast. While this season’s duration is between June through November, the month that tends to experience the most hurricanes is September.
Every three years, there will usually be an average of two category three to five hurricanes. The first time on record that the United States experienced two category four or five storms in a single year, however, was when Hurricane Irma struck Florida in September 2017.
Be Prepared With the Best Emergency Kit
a 72 hour bug out bag is recommended for a variety of disaster situations. These kits contain the basic items you will need for an evacuation, such as tools, emergency food, first-aide supplies, and more. Having a few extra survival bags on hand is also a good idea. This is because you may have a neighbor or an extended family member that wasn’t prepared for this event.Once you have the best emergency kits, be sure to keep them in a place that you and your family can access easily. In addition to making sure that everyone knows where these survival gear bags are stored, it’s also essential to have an evacuation plan. Experts will recommend that you practice your evacuation plan and allow for contingencies. When a natural disaster strikes, it can be a very confusing and emotional time. When you schedule regular evacuation drills, this can be beneficial for reinforcing safety and other procedures.
